After reviewing close to 40 applications, the Foundation’s Board of Directors has chosen to award grants to 13 Central Florida-based non-profits, helping them produce community-focused programming for 2024. ACA Pabst Steinmetz Scholarship Fund
Atlantic Center for the Arts is one of the premier artist communities in the United States. Artists come from across the world to attend three-week residencies that support master and associate artists across a range of creative disciplines, including both visual and performing arts.
The Foundation has a history of supporting ACA through both endowments and The Pabst Visitor Center and Gallery. An aspiration has always been to help support and incentivize an endowment large enough to provide scholarships to every artist who needs one and to continue that support in perpetuity. The Pabst Steinmetz Scholarship Fund seeks to build that endowment by providing an initial $250,000 to be matched dollar for dollar by 2022. The goal is to continue that challenge by securing additional donations.

2020 Roundtables & 2020 Focus on Research
(Orlando, Washington DC, New York City)
Led by The University of Florida Arts and Medicine, The Pabst Steinmetz continues its support of programming and research at UF, the ultimate goal being to create a national research repository for the developing field of arts and health. To reach this goal, three roundtables will convene leading experts and community practitioners whose work and planning will provide the catalyst and strategy for research protocols at the international, national and local levels. The aim of the research will be to provide data supporting the importance of arts engagement for public health together with compelling practical examples for leaders in medicine, community health, and public and private sectors.

Innovation Award Winners
Two collaborative projects have been announced as the 2019 winners of the Pabst Steinmetz Foundation Arts & Wellness Innovation Awards. The winning teams, comprising UCF personnel and community organizations, were each awarded $25,000 to further their interdisciplinary arts and wellness projects.
The winning initiatives are “Creative Approaches to Combat HIV Stigma and Discrimination from Health Providers” and “Project Xavier Hands-free Training Game.”

“Combatting Provider-Enacted HIV Stigma through Creative Educational Materials”
The team working on “Combatting Provider-Enacted HIV Stigma through Creative Educational Materials” (co-lead by UCF professors Christa Cook from Nursing and Blake Scott and Nathan Holic from Writing and Rhetoric) will create short scenario-based comics, or “graphic pathographies,” that quickly and impactfully illustrate the forms and effects of stigma in provider-client interactions. The first phase of the planned research involves working with area HIV service organizations (e.g., Hope & Help, Miracle of Love, Bliss) to identify and conduct focus groups and interviews with individuals living with HIV who have experienced provider-related stigma. Because this phase is on hold for safety reasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team of researchers has been working on several additional tasks in the meantime: 1) we submitted our IRB protocol for our planned focus groups/interviews; 2) we consulted with two comic artists who have been part of the “graphic medicine” movement to get their ideas about the process of comic design, and these meetings have prompted us to consider using comics as a means of data collection; 3) we met with a medical librarian to conduct a literature search about data collection using comic storyboards, and were excited to find that this is an innovative approach for eliciting participants’ experiences and their responses to them; 4) we have adjusted our research protocols to enable participants to “fill or draw in” comic storyboards that illustrate their experiences, and Nathan has designed multiple versions and drafts of these storyboards (see a few examples below); 5) we are planning to conduct an online user-test of three different versions of the comic storyboards with 8-10 community members so that we can refine these tools before the full face-to-face focus groups and interviews begin, and this will also allow us to explore the feasibility of conducting further data collection online.

The Pabst Steinmetz Foundation is honored to support the publication of a white paper detailing progress (Policy, Research, Community Models) at the intersection of Arts and Health across the United States. The Foundation will also support a convention (Arts and Health. Community Models) in Orlando, FL on September 23-24, 2019 at The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

The Pabst Steinmetz Foundation Scholarship Fund at Atlantic Center for the Arts
The purpose of the fund is to provide any artist needing financial support during the three-week residency with a scholarship. The Foundation is requesting a match from other donors for the fund.
